When Bulgaria’s road authorities began deploying average speed enforcement systems across highways and expressways, many drivers were caught off guard. These zones calculate your average speed between two points.
As a software engineer and someone who genuinely enjoys driving, I wanted to do something about it. Not by breaking the rules, but by creating a smarter, fairer way for drivers to stay informed and in control. That’s how BlitzWay was born, a free navigation app built specifically for Bulgarian roads, combining certified data accuracy with real-time driver intelligence.
The Idea Behind BlitzWay
The concept was simple:
If drivers knew their real-time average speed within the enforcement zone, they could drive more confidently and avoid unnecessary penalties. The challenge, however, was to create an app that could:
- Have all average speed zones
- Calculate the driver’s current average speed in real time
- Integrate crowd-sourced traffic and police data
- Stay lightweight, accurate, and fully local to Bulgaria

One of BlitzWay’s biggest strengths is that it includes every official average speed zone published by bgtoll.bg, the government’s toll and traffic platform. Each segment is verified, mapped, and continuously updated to ensure reliability.
Unlike many global navigation tools that rely on user-generated or approximate data (like Waze), BlitzWay uses the official national dataset. That means you get the same zones the authorities use, no missing sections, no outdated points.
Live Average Speed Monitoring
BlitzWay automatically detects when you enter and exit a zone and continuously calculates your current average speed. This allows you to adjust before it’s too late.
For example, if you hit traffic and your average drops well below the limit, the app helps you make up for it safely before exiting the zone, ensuring your final average stays within the legal threshold.
It’s not about encouraging speeding; it’s about awareness and balance.
Powered by Waze: Real-Time Traffic and Police Reports
BlitzWay integrates with Waze, leveraging its massive community of drivers for live police, traffic, and hazard alerts. This combination of official data + real-time crowdsourced insights gives Bulgarian drivers the best of both worlds.

Camera Protection and Smart Alerts
In addition to average speed zones, BlitzWay warns about fixed and mobile speed cameras across the country. The alerts are intelligently designed to provide just the right amount of information at the right time, without overwhelming or distracting the driver.
A Developer’s Standpoint
This project is personal. I built BlitzWay because I believe Bulgarian drivers deserve transparency and tools that work for them, not against them. The official justification for average speed enforcement is safety, but in practice, it often feels like a budget-filling mechanism.
With BlitzWay, I wanted to give something back, a tool that empowers rather than punishes, helps rather than surprises.
